In a decaying future, a young protagonist seeks a cure for his sister Yonah’s fatal Black Scrawl disease. Aided by Grimoire Weiss, Kaine, and Emil, he fights monstrous "Shades" and gathers sealed verses. However, he discovers the Shades are actually the disembodied souls of real humans (Gestalts), while he is just an empty clone shell (Replicant). By defeating the Shadowlord to save Yonah, he inadvertently dooms the Replicants to madness and dooms humanity to extinction.
